John F Cowsert's first home
-->> Detailed Family Tree (Family Members Only)

Most of the family members who come to the Cowsert Reunion are descended from either David Pinkney or John Freelin Cowsert, Jr., and they gather every year near the place where these two Cowsert brothers settled over 120 years ago.

David Pinkney Cowsert came first. Born in Tennessee and raised in Missouri, he led an adventurous life as a wagon team master and surveyor before joining the California Gold Rush in 1850. California was his home until 1882, when he decided to buy land in Texas. He was the first of the Cowsert family to come to Kimble County, where he purchased ranch land on the banks of the North Llano River.

John Freelin Cowsert, Jr. had settled in Missouri but was suddenly left with six children to raise when his wife, Rebecca, died. After several difficult years, he decided to join his brother, David, in Texas. John bundled up his family and brought them all to Kimble County in 1883. He also bought land on the North Llano River and built a log cabin to live in until he could build a more suitable house. The log cabin still stands and is visited by the Cowsert descendants each year during the reunion. The background for this page is a picture of the cabin as it looks today.
